West Bromwich Albion have sent shockwaves through elements of their own supporters after announcing ticket increases of up to 51% on a like for like games basis following promotion to the Premier League.

At the higher end Albion have increased season ticket prices by over £100 on last season's 'early bird' prices, despite a reduction in home fixtures following promotion to the English top flight.

The increase per match ticket for an adult season ticket holder located in the West Stand is around £9 on a like for like available basis as compared to last season’s Championship campaign.

The West Bromwich Albion hierarchy is sure to attract some criticism for a move which seems ill timed considering the economic state of the country and the deep impact of the recession in the Black Country. December 2009 figures show claimant count unemployment is 62% higher in the Black Country than it was one year ago.

The football club claims on average adult prices have increased by 13% having frozen prices last season and cut them the two previous years.

"With season ticket income being our second biggest revenue stream after television fees, we also had to structure our prices in a way that will enable the club to be as competitive as possible in the Premier League." Albion Chief Executive Mark Jenkins commented.

Yet some supporters are left to question Albion's inability to find a long term shirt sponsor in recent years as one area where the club is failing to maximise commercial revenue.

Many would question if a percentage of Albion supporters are carrying a disproportionate increase in prices relative to the regional economic conditions and on the back of potential cuts to public services following the general election in a few weeks.

Yet again to some it appears football is operating in a financial world detached from the reality of the supporter.
